Welcome

Hello, I'm Jean Lucas.

I teach flute and piano and am based in South Buckinghamshire, England.

My goal is to nurture and encourage musical talent, enabling it to grow and fulfil its potential.

Although some of my students have gone on to pursue music as a career, some of my most satisfying experiences as a teacher have been enabling hidden musical talent to blossom.

"Teaching is not just a dry business of scales and exercises and etudes; a great teacher is one who can light a spark in you"

Leonard Bernstein

About me

I have been teaching in schools, as well as privately, for over 40 years. My teaching career began at Downe House School, Berkshire and Marlborough College, Wiltshire, before I left to focus on my family and private teaching practice.

I started learning the piano at the age of 9 years and the flute two years later. I then went on to take the specialist music course at Winchester College of Art  before entering the Royal Academy of Music at 18.

Whilst at the Royal Academy of Music, I received the LRAM diploma for flute and the ARCM diploma for piano. I studied with Derek Honner, William Bennett and Fiona Cameron and graduated with an Honours Degree in music.

I currently teach at High March Prep School alongside private teaching at home.

My family are very important to me. I have 4 children and 9 grandchildren (and counting!). I also enjoy walking, cooking and working alongside my husband in his business.

Approach

I am committed to every student's success and, throughout my career, have never had a student fail any music examination. My ultimate goal is to set pupils up for a lifetime of loving music, providing the skills, the inspiration and the confidence they need to embrace whatever musical opportunities come their way.

I aim to create a friendly, relaxed but hard working environment.

The musical path and teaching material is chosen very carefully for each pupil; lessons are tailored to each individual to develop their own interests, aspirations and musical preferences.

Although I generally prepare students for ABRSM examinations, I occasionally use the Trinity examination board which is better suited to and preferred by some students. Of course, some choose not to take examinations, which is absolutely fine.

Testimonials

"Mrs Lucas has been teaching me flute and piano for four years now. She is very warm, kind and patient, especially when I get things wrong! It’s like having a special teacher friend"

Thea L. (aged 10)

"I have had Mrs Lucas for 7 years now. She is a wonderful teacher who is caring and kind; because of her I now love to play the piano and I look forward to her lessons each week. If anybody needed a music teacher I would recommend Mrs Lucas"

Alysha M.

"Being taught by Jean for 9 years was a wonderful experience. She inspired a passion for the flute and love of music that I have continued into adult life. As I progressed through the Grades, Jean was exceptional at helping me put together posture, embouchure, articulation and breathing to develop confident technique allowing me to reach my potential whilst helping me express emotion and musicality in each piece of music. Jean is extremely warm, personable, encouraging and supportive which makes her so enjoyable to work with"

Annabel H.

"Jean Lucas taught 4 of my 5 children. This included flute, piano and aural lessons. Jean always showed herself to be extremely professional with very high standards, and a teacher who, in my opinion, is able to get the best from the child she is teaching.

She herself plays at an extremely high standard and is able to put this to good use in helping her students in their interpretation of the music, as well as achieving accurate and good technique.

I have no hesitation in recommending her"

Elizabeth E.

"I have such fond memories of my flute lessons with Jean—the fun and warmth she brought meant they quickly became the highlight of my week! Whilst never failing to encourage, her quickness in noticing my musical potential meant she pushed me to progress very quickly at an early stage, and her shrewd musicianship meant she always provided the right challenges to spur me on. As well as being an excellent musician, Jean’s kindness towards, and investment in, her students makes for a really personal and inspiring learning experience and I would attribute much of my continued passion for music to these early lessons"
